Slip Testing For
Schools, Colleges & Universities.

The UK education estate is vast and varied — primary schools, academy trusts, sixth-form colleges, universities, halls of residence, and student unions. Each has its own slip-risk profile and its own regulatory exposure under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.

Corridors and circulation

High-footfall circulation routes are the single largest slip risk in any educational premises. Matting failures, cleaning-chemical residue, and wet-weather tracking all combine to create seasonal PTV drops. We recommend annual testing for all UK school and college main circulation routes.

Sports halls and changing rooms

Sports-specific flooring has very different PTV requirements from general school flooring. Changing-room floors adjacent to showers are the single highest-risk zone in most schools — wet barefoot feet on polished stone or concrete can produce PTV values well below 20.

Canteens and food service

School and university catering areas combine wet cleaning regimes, spilled food and drink, and heavy cross-traffic. We test regularly in this environment and can advise on both the testing protocol and appropriate PTV targets.

Halls of residence

Student accommodation buildings have their own slip profile — kitchens, bathrooms, communal areas, stair-towers. Universities increasingly test halls as a standard part of safety compliance, driven by insurer requirements and parental scrutiny.

Frequently asked

Questions about slip testing in schools & universities

Do you test during term time?

Yes. Testing is fast and non-destructive. We routinely work around classes, and for larger schools we schedule during breaks, free periods, or out-of-hours.

Which school areas carry the highest slip risk?

Circulation corridors, dining hall entrance zones, sports hall/changing room transitions, and external entrance paving. Changing-room floors adjacent to showers are the highest individual slip risk.

Do universities typically test halls of residence?

Increasingly yes — driven by insurer requirements and parental scrutiny. Communal kitchens, bathrooms, stair towers, and entry lobbies are the priority zones.
