Frequently
Asked.

Everything you need to know about UKAS-accredited BS 7976 / BS EN 16165 slip testing in England — costs, standards, turnaround, legal admissibility.

How much does slip testing cost in the UK?

On-site BS 7976 / BS EN 16165 pendulum testing in the UK typically ranges from £500 to £1,500 per visit depending on location, number of test areas, and site access. Every quote includes a full UKAS-accredited report within 48 hours. We provide fixed-price quotes with no hidden extras — contact us for a free quote tailored to your site.

What PTV value does the HSE accept?

The HSE follows the UK Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG) classification: PTV 36 or above is "low slip potential" and compliant; PTV 25 to 35 is "moderate" and requires active management; below PTV 25 is "high slip potential" and unacceptable. These thresholds apply in both dry and wet (contaminated) conditions.

Are UKAS reports required by UK courts?

UKAS accreditation is not legally mandatory, but it is the practical gold standard. UKAS-accredited BS 7976 / BS EN 16165 reports are consistently accepted as expert evidence by UK courts, the HSE, and all major UK insurers. A non-accredited report carries significantly less weight in personal injury litigation.

What is UKAS Schedule No. 7933?

Schedule No. 7933 is the UKAS reference for our slip resistance testing laboratory’s accreditation. It is listed publicly on the UKAS website (ukas.com) and identifies the specific tests, methods, and equipment we are accredited for. Every UKAS laboratory has a unique schedule number.

How quickly can you attend a site?

We typically attend English sites within 5 to 10 working days of booking. Urgent post-incident attendance for claims defence can often be arranged within 48 to 72 hours. Contact us with your location and requirements for a current lead time.

What standards do you test to?

Primarily BS 7976-2 (the pendulum test — HSE-preferred method). We also test to EN 13036-4, DIN 51097 (wet barefoot for pools), and DIN 51130 (R-ratings via ramp testing). Schedule 7933 details exactly which methods we are accredited for.

Do I need to close my premises during testing?

No. The pendulum test is non-destructive and takes only a few minutes per test area. We routinely test retail, hospitality, and healthcare premises during operating hours. For busy venues we often work out-of-hours without surcharge.

How often should I re-test?

Annual testing is the minimum for any commercial premises. High-traffic and wet-environment sites (swimming pools, commercial kitchens, busy retail entrances) often benefit from bi-annual testing. Re-testing is also recommended after any flooring change, cleaning-regime change, or slip incident.

What if my floor currently reads below PTV 25?

The first action is usually to address the contamination source (matting, cleaning regime, signage). If the floor surface itself is the problem, options include proprietary anti-slip treatments (which we can independently test after application) or flooring replacement. We never sell these treatments — our role is independent testing.

Can you handle a live insurance claim?

Yes. We routinely carry out post-incident forensic testing for both defendant-side businesses and claimant-side solicitors. Our expert witness reports are written to CPR Part 35 standards and used in UK civil courts.

Are your engineers employed or subcontracted?

All our site attendance is carried out by direct employees of Surface Performance — we never subcontract. Our engineers hold current UKAS-approved training and the site attendance is fully insured and indemnified.

Do you work outside England?

Yes. We work across the UK, Ireland (via slip-testing-ireland.com), Europe, and internationally. However slip-tests.co.uk is focused on our English service — for Irish work please see our Ireland site, and for international enquiries contact us directly.
